CSA 2012: Farm Bucks

CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)

In a traditional CSA, you buy a share of the farm’s harvest, typically vegetables only, at the beginning of the year. Each week you receive your share of the farm’s harvest. You are supporting the farm by ensuring the farmer has enough money throughout the year, time to market the produce before the long summer days of hard work start up again, and shared risk in the case of crop failure.

In 2010 RiverSong Farm offered a traditional CSA, but we are not comfortable in sharing our risk of crop failure or a bad season. If those things happen we do not want you to lose your investment. Farm Bucks is a modified CSA. We use it to reduce risk, and add more variety and freedom to our customers. Farm Bucks allow us to distribute the risk over two years instead of one season.

Farm Bucks, Additional Value for You:

  • You get whatever you want from our farm, anything we sell: Vegetables (the ones you like), Meat, Eggs, Fruit, Honey, Maple Syrup, Crafts, Baked Goods, Chicks and Chickens, even our Workshops
  • You get the quantities you want, as much or little as you care to eat
  • You have two full years to use your Bucks, there’s no shared risk of crop failure
  • You don’t have to worry about not picking up your share, you can use Farm Bucks whenever you like any time of the year, not just April to October
  • You get a discount on purchases
  • You don’t need to carry cash when you visit us at the market, we’ll just deduct it from your account

How to use Farm Bucks

Just visit us where we’re selling. We’ll deduct your total from your account. If you want us to bring something special, or hold an item for you, call or email at least one day in advance, and we’ll have it for you. For example, we don’t always bring our herbs, and sometimes our breads or eggs sell out fast. If you call, you’ll get priority.

How to buy Farm Bucks

Bring us a check, cash, or use paypay.com (there is a surcharge for using paypal) to send us your initial deposit. Your discount is built right into your account. When you deposit $100, we’ll add an extra 5% to your Farm Bucks account. $250 gets you a 7.5% increase, $500 or more gets you a 10% increase. We’ll need your name, phone numbers, email, and mailing address along with payment to get your account opened. Your account expires at the end of 2 years, and we will keep any remaining balance. Adding funds to your account re-sets the time limit.

Work for Farm Bucks

Sarah and I will be having a baby in early 2012, and I’ll need extra help on the farm. If you’d like to gain experience on the farm working with animals and vegetables, and in return get some healthy, chemical free food, that you helped make, join our work-for-food program. Any work you do will be credited to your Farm Bucks account to spend now or later. We need hands on the farm (planting, weeding, picking, and washing) and some to help with marketing. We may need other help and not realize it, so feel free to talk to us if you’ve got another role you’d like to fill.
