We Grow Vegetables
We built our green house in January 2010, and it has made this season a promising one. This year we're turning our focus on the garden. We're going really big to support going to Farmers Markets, and our CSA.
In addition to the vegetables, we're growing some grains for making flour and animal feed. We're also growing lots of flowers. Those are mostly for the bees, but we'll probably bring some if you invite us over for dinner.
The following are what we're growing this season. It's not the complete list, but it is pretty close.
- Globe Artichoke (This is an experiment for us. We've got about 16 plants that are still doing well.)
- Windsor Broccoli (cabbage worms got us bad, so probably not enough to bring to market early. We'll try for better results in fall.)
- Roodnerf Brussels Sprouts (We spent hours in spring squishing cabbage worms on these, so we're hoping to have them in June and also in the fall)
- Jackson Wonder Lima Bush Bean
- Mammoth Red Rock Cabbage (those cabbage worms! not enough to market. Fingers crossed for fall)
- Early Jersey Wakefield Cabbage (same as the red-rock)
- Ventura Celery (this didn't turn out well. The germination time is 4 weeks, and we only had a few that made it. None made it into the garden.)
- Bright Lights Chard
- Argentata Swiss Chard
- Abenaki Calais Corn, Flint
- Ashworth Corn,Yellow Sweet
- De Bourbonne Cornichon Cucumber (with the heat early this spring, we're hoping the cukes do okay. That may prevent a great harvest, but time will tell)
- Marketmore 76 Cucumber, Slicing
- Shirofumi Soy Bean
- Mitla Black Tepary Bean
- Cannellini Shell Dry Bean
- Northeaster Pole Bean
- Kentucky Wonder Pole Bean
- Rotonda Bianca Eggplant (the eggplant died in our mini-drought this May. We've still got 2 that are barely hanging in there)
- Love Lies Bleeding Amaranth Flowers
- Crackerjack Mix African Marigold Flowers
- Harlequin French Marigold Flowers
- Lavender Flowers
- White Sage Herbs
- Lemon Balm Herbs
- Garlic chives Herbs
- Bouquet Dill Herbs
- German Chamomile Herbs
- White Russian Kale
- Tom Thumb Lettuce
- Cimaron Lettuce
- Prizedhead Red Leaf Lettuce
- Mereveille Des Quatre Saisons Lettuce
- Blushed Butter Cos Lettuce
- Cajun Jewel Okra
- Clear Dawn Onion
- Crystal White Wax Onion
- Evergreen Hardy White Scallion Onion
- Bleu De Solaize Leek Onion (our leeks just aren't doing well. We're not sure why yet.)
- Yellow of Parma Onion
- Red Creole Onion
- Shallots Onion
- Dwarf Grey Sugar Snow Pea
- Long Red Narrow Cayenne Pepper, Hot (most of our peppers got burned in the greenhouse, but we've restarted them from seed directly in the soil. We'll be late on peppers, but we'll have them.)
- Anaheim Pepper, Hot
- Early Jalapeno Pepper, Hot
- Purple Beauty Pepper, Sweet
- Cubanelle Semi-Sweet Pepper, Sweet
- New England Pie Pumpkin
- Spaghetti Squash (mice picked 90% of our squash seeds out from the green house, so we had very few early starts. We'll have some early, and much more later.)
- White scallop Squash
- Table Queen Acorn Squash
- Pink Banana Winter Squash
- Saffron Squash, Summer
- Waltham Butternut Squash, Winter
- Sweet Dakota Rose Watermelon
- Black Zucchini
- Mammoth Grey Stripe Sunflower
- Cherokee Purple Tomato (like our peppers, all our tomatoes were burnt in the green house. Our outdoor starts are much better, but will be later than we'd like. This winter we'll be working on temperature controlled vents in the green house to prevent a burn next year.)
- Heinz 2653 Paste Tomato
- Cosmonaut Volkov Tomato
- White Hailstone Radish
- Purple Top White Globe Turnip
